Consequently, in order to aid policy formulation and decision-making the interactions and system dynamics in the continuum river catchment to the coastal zone need to be identified and studied. This paper focuses on the natural and human systems at catchment area level, and especially on the interactions and feedback mechanism between them. The framework and two case studies (Baltic Sea and Black Sea) are presented here, as well as suggestions for follow up. Sweden). For several reasons the text slowly took its shape and when the time for submittance came the contact with some in the group had been lost and was not to be restored as they had left the Academia. The manuscript became shelved for a long time until the three remaining authors decided to try to publish it by our own as we thought the text still had some qualities. This is now done as a report in a series from the Dept. of Water and Environmental Studies, Linköping University. We like to acknowledge the both the original working group and, especially, those active in this report, Drs.

An Agent-Based Model for Exploring Land Market Mechanisms for Coastal Zone Management
This paper presents an agent-based model of a land market (ALMA-C) to simulate the emergence of land prices and urban land patterns from bottom-up. Our model mimics individual decisions to buy and to sell land depending on economic, sociological and political factors as well as on the characteristics of the spatial environment. To this we add ecological and environmental considerations and focu...

متن کاملScientific approaches to address challenges in coastal management
Anthropogenic activity has a negative impact on many coastal ecosystems, compromising the significant direct and indirect socio-economic benefits provided in these areas. Maintaining activities that depend on coastal zones while preserving the ecological state of the ecosystems represents a management challenge. Management of coastal zones requires scientifically based knowledge, due to the com...
متن کاملApproaches to and tools for managing environmental conflicts in coastal zones in Africa: Challenges and prospects in relation to Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)
Conflicts in coastal zones arise as a result of the variance between divergent interests, within limited and dynamic socio-spatial and ecological dimensions, with little effort at critical consensus. Coastal zones worldwide exhibit three classical internal trademarks – high pressures for development, management weaknesses to protect coastal ecosystems and the deterioration of environmental cond...
متن کاملEconomic valuation for sustainable development in the Swedish coastal zone.
The Swedish coastal zone is a scene of conflicting interests about various goods and services provided by nature. Open-access conditions and the public nature of many services increase the difficulty in resolving these conflicts. "Sustainability" is a vague but widely accepted guideline for finding reasonable trade-offs between different interests. The UN view of sustainable development suggest...

Cooperation between the social and natural sciences has become essential in order to encompass all the dimensions of coastal zone management. Socio-economic approaches are increasingly recommended to complement integrated assessment in support of these initiatives. A systematic review of the academic literature was carried out in order to analyze the main types of socio-economic assessments use...
